Shaving for a Cause: My Bald and Beautiful Journey
In this world, so many people are in need—some struggling with illness, others facing financial hardship. As a doctor, I have always tried to help my patients in ways beyond medicine, but this time, I wanted to do something different—something humbling and meaningful.
So, I went bald.
I took part in the Bald and Beautiful program, a charity initiative that raises funds for children with cancer who have lost their hair due to chemotherapy. Losing hair may seem like a small price to pay in the grand scheme of things, but for a child battling cancer, it’s an emotional and deeply personal struggle. This initiative helps provide financial support, medical aid, and encouragement to these brave young fighters.
For this fund raising campaign, I let my patients decide the fate of my hair. They contributed to the cause, and once it reached the set target, I will cut off all my hair!
The Moment of Truth
Sitting in the barber’s chair, I felt a mix of excitement and nervousness. It’s funny how something as simple as hair can hold so much of our identity. As the clippers buzzed, stripping away years of familiarity, I realized how much we attach to our self-image. Within eight minutes, it was gone. Tada! All Bald!
And just like that, I had stripped away not just my hair, but a layer of ego as well.
More Than Just a Haircut
This experience wasn’t just about raising funds—it was about stepping outside of my comfort zone and embracing humility.
After going bald, I could truly understand how distressing hair loss can be. Many conditions beyond cancer can lead to hair loss—autoimmune diseases like alopecia areata, hormonal imbalances, and genetic factors. No matter the cause, losing hair often brings emotional distress and impacts self-confidence.
Through this journey, I developed a deeper empathy for my patients who experience hair loss. It’s more than just a physical change; it’s a psychological challenge that deserves compassion and support.
Of course, I had to balance things out, so I let my goatee grow in—thank goodness for facial hair!
A Small Act, A Big Impact
Looking back, I wouldn’t change a thing! Seeing some of my fellow physicians join in, feeling the overwhelming support from my patients, staff, and family—it all made the journey worthwhile. If shaving my head could bring awareness and aid to those who need it most, then it was worth every strand of hair lost.
To anyone reading this: there’s always a way to give back. It doesn’t have to be something drastic like going bald. Whether it’s donating, volunteering, or simply offering kindness, every small act of generosity makes a difference.
Would I do it again? Without a doubt. Because in the end, beauty isn’t about hair—it’s about heart.
