Batik: The Malaysian Unity through Diversity

As I was preparing to go to the APAAACI congress, my son saw that I was wearing something colorful and different. He asked, where are you going? I said to the Ah Pah Chi congress, he said Wow! You are going to the APT congress? You are so Cool!

I did not tell him the truth.

At the congress, someone asked, what is it you are wearing? It’s so colorful! I said, it’s Malaysian Batik, its the national equivalent to a Tuxedo.

And I’d love to share the story of the Malaysian Batik with you.

It all started in the 15th century, Malacca was a busy city of trade and commerce.

Traders from across the world came to this one place in Malaysia, bringing their unique influences.

Our neighbors from Indonesia and Thailand shared their artistic heritage.

Indian traders came and brought their spice and from there we have our Malaysian Briyani.

There was even a royal marriage between Sultan Mansur Shah and Princess Hang Li Po of China. Her entourage stayed and blended into Malaysian culture, creating beautiful Baba Nyonya traditions.

And also the Orang Asli, who shared their wisdom of herbal medicine. Knowledge that we still use today.

This is what Batik symbolizes. It represents the Malaysian spirit of Unity In Diversity. Each unique culture adds its color and pattern. Together, they create something harmonious and beautiful.

I believe that Science is also like Batik. Each discovery from research, teaching, questions and patient care forms a unique pattern of knowledge that future generations can draw on.

So, welcome to Malaysia. Welcome to APAAACI Congress 2024. And welcome to being part of our Batik culture.
