How to Safely Disinfect & Reuse Your Face Mask

Safe Reuse of Face Masks: What You Need to Know

Face masks are still a key tool against respiratory infections.

I still remember during Covid-19 when face masks were in short supply.

We had to learn how to make do with what is available and to also reuse what we can.

Now, face masks are easily available.

But perhaps you are wondering if—and how—you can safely disinfect and reuse them without compromising their protective power.

Here’s an up-to-date, science-backed guide.

What This Applies To

  • Surgical and N95/KN95 respirators (disposable, filter-based)

  • Cloth masks (reusable fabric masks with filter pockets)

Quick reminder: Never attempt to disinfect & reuse masks that are visibly soiled, wet, or damaged. Always inspect before reuse.

What Not to Do

  • ❌ Alcohol sprays or wipes (ethanol, isopropanol)

  • ❌ Chlorine/bleach solutions
These agents destroy the electrostatic charge and fiber structure that give your mask its filtration efficiency.

Simple Decontamination Method

Step-by-Step for Surgical/N95 Masks

  1. Choose Your Method

    • At home: Dry heat (oven preheated to 70 °C, 30 min).

    • You can also rotate masks (5 masks, one per day).

  2. Prepare a Clean Environment

    • Use a dedicated clean tray or oven rack.

    • Don’t stack masks—treat one at a time.

  3. Treat & Cool

    • For dry heat: preheat, insert mask, timer for 30 min, then cool fully on a clean surface.

  4. Inspect Before Reuse

    • Check straps, nose wire, and mask body for tears, looseness, or warping.

    • Discard if fit or structure is compromised.

Caring for Cloth Masks

  • Wash after every use:

    • Machine wash on hot cycle (>60 °C) with laundry detergent.

    • Tumble-dry on high heat or air-dry in full sun.

  • Replace filters:

    • If your mask uses disposable filter inserts, swap them weekly or sooner if damp.

When to Toss a Mask

  • Mask becomes wet, soiled, or visibly damaged

  • Straps or nose bridge no longer hold a snug seal

  • You’ve exceeded 5 decontamination cycles for N95/surgical masks

Why It Matters

Maintaining your mask’s filtration efficiency and fit is critical. Improper disinfecting not only reduces protection but can also introduce new contaminants. By following these proven methods, you’ll extend your mask’s life safely—without sacrificing your health.
