The Truth About Natural Skincare & Allergies
Eczema patients often turn to natural moisturizers to help repair their skin barrier. While this sounds like a great idea, the reality is that natural doesn’t always mean safe. Some plant-based ingredients and essential oils can actually trigger allergic reactions and make eczema worse.
🚫 Myth: “Natural = Hypoallergenic”
✔ Fact: Even natural ingredients can be allergens. For example:
- Essential oils (lavender, tea tree, citrus) can cause contact dermatitis.
- Plant extracts (aloe vera, chamomile, calendula) may lead to irritation or delayed allergic reactions.
- Natural Cold Pressed/Unfiltered Nut oils (coconut oil, almond oil) can be risky for those with nut allergies.
The problem? Many people assume natural products are always better, but without proper testing and formulation, they can still cause allergic reactions and skin irritation.
Fragrance-Free vs. Unscented: What’s the Difference?
If you have fragrance allergies, choosing the right product can be tricky. You may see labels that say “unscented”, but did you know that unscented products can still contain fragrance?
✔ Fragrance-Free = No added fragrances at all. ✅ Safe for allergy-prone skin.
❌ Unscented = Fragrances may be used to mask odors. 🚨 Can still trigger allergies!
If you suffer from eczema, allergic rhinitis, or asthma, always look for “fragrance-free” products to reduce the risk of irritation.
